The GNC Company was started in 1935 by David Shakarian. He started off with a single store that sold health food. It has been said that he made a $35 dollar profit his first day open. Then within six months, the second store was opened. Both of his stores were destroyed no less than a year later during a flood. However the stores were quickly rebuild and re-opened. He then opened 5 more in early 1941. The stores did not carry the General Nutrition Center name until the health food craze in the sixties, but the name has stuck ever since. GNC now boasts over six thousand stores in the US alone and even more in over 41 other countries.
