Western Union

Founded in 1851 this company started out under the name “New York and Mississippi Printing Telegraph Company” and later in 1856 changed its name to Western Union.  They were the first to have a transcontinental telegraph line running across North America. In 1861 they would get recognized for this accomplishment.  The company continued to innovate and expand their services.  In 1869 they created the first stock ticker, in 1914 they would introduce the first consumer charge card and in 1933 they brought music to our ears with the first singing telegram service.

As any company of its size, Western Union transformed its services and offerings through the years and eventually began using their communication network to transfer cash.  It did not take long before they were more successful with fund transfers than they had ever been with the telegraph service.
