Newsday Inc. Is focused on bringing news editorials every day, serving mainly New York and the counties of Long Island, Suffolk and Nassau. The news publication boasts a massive circulation 380,000 making it the 11th highest in the US and the highest among suburban newspapers.
The headquarters of the Newsday tabloid is located in Melville New York in Long Island and was established by Alicia Patterson who received strong backing and support from Harry Guggenheim, her husband. The first newspaper publication was from Hempstead on September 4th 1940 and after the demise of Patterson, Guggenheim sold the publication to Times Mirror co, who was the owner of Los Angeles Times, all this took place in the year 1971. A separate edition called the Queens edition was launched by Newsday in 1977 which was closely followed by the edition called the New York City.
In May 12 2008, Cablevision bought over Newsday for a huge amount of $650 million. The bidders that withdrew out on Newsday was Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation who bid for a sum of an astonishing $580 million.The editorial style of Newsday is in Tabloid format, but is far from being sensationalistic like the New York Daily News which is a daily local tabloid and thrives on sensational topics.
Newsday uses graphics that are captivating and has seemed to attract the nation’s interest and with illustrators who have stayed with the publications for a long time like Ned Levine, Gary Viskupic and the Pulitzer Prize winner Walt Handelsman whose political cartoons are a daily syndicate of the news tabloid.
