The Cabela’s company profile starts off with the story of a fisherman looking for a way to sell a few lures. Dick Cabela thought that he had some really nice fishing lures he created by hand and ran an ad in the local newspaper to sell them. The advertisement read “12 hand tied flies for $1” and only received one single response. He later come up with a better advertisement and ran it in a outdoor magazine. This time he got responses from all over the country and the company we know today, was born.

Until 1964 Dick and his wife ran their fishing lure business from their kitchen table until 1964 where their continuing success really started paying off and allowed them to invest in a larger location. Moving to an abandoned John Deere building which housed over 50,000 square foot for their new operation, Cabela’s had started to gain a strong following. Then again moving to a 250,000 square foot location that the Cabela’s headquarters still operates out of in Sidney, Nebraska there was no stopping this powerful business model.

A lot has changes since Dick ran his first ad in 1961, but one thing has not. The company still to this day offer many handmade goods and respects the quality and craftsmanship of skilled outdoorsmen. Cabella’s has become the authority when it comes to outdoor outfitters. Selling everything from guns, outerwear, and knives – to you guessed it, fishing lures Cabella’s has become a household name for those who enjoy camping, fishing and hunting.

Cabela’s hit the New York stock exchange in 2004 and has been sprouting up new locations across the country ever since. A huge amount of this companies business is still done through catalog. They deliver their catalogs to over 125 countries now and counting!
